The brutal economy has led to the creation of a name for the latest fear around Gift Cards not being honored - The Great Gift Card Scare. While it certainly is true that major merchants are going out of business and this is going to make their gift cards and certificates not valid at some point (Circuit City) for example. The merchants are doing all they can to warn people who are holding the cards. Gift Cards for Circuit City will be honored through March.

It is safe to say that a scare has reached a new level when the media has given it an official title. Make it lagit for Gift Cards as they are now referring to it as the Great Gift Card scare of 2009.

Common sense and most media outlets tell us that purchasing and giving gift cards remains extremely reliable. It does make sense to not purchase cards from merchants who are on the brink financially. Also, always apply to golden rule of gift cards: use them right when you get them!
