Gift Card activity is at the annual low here in the summer time. The hot weather, combined with the lack of holidays makes for a very slow time for merchants and individuals for gift card activity. The rouch economic times that we are experiencing also has slowed gift certificate giving and gifting.
The true test for all of the industry will be to see if giving volume picks up this holiday season. If the house market is any indicator, I believe we will see the needed uptick in activity and Hoiday season of 2009 will return to the massive gift card era of a few years back. Certianly it is true that gift card giving has never declined year over year but the incredible growth rates that our industry was going through has throttled way back. The double digit percentage growth has halted but given how slow last year was, and the encouraging economic news, 2009 is set up to return to massive growth rates for the gift card world.
Let's hang tight and see what happens. But as we all know, if you don't know exactly what someone wants to recieve, gift a gift card!
