Losing a gift card to a local restaurant like Nishino or a national brand like itunes or norsdtrom presents an interesting problem. Certainly all merchants want to build good will and help people when they have lost a gift card but this becomes a difficult proposition when nothing can be proved. Anyone can go to a store or restaurant and clain that they have lost a gift card.
After reading many articles, it appears that the best way to recieve a new gift card for the one you lost is to somehow present proof of purchase. This often requires the not so comfortable step of asking the person who gave you the gift card a reciept or proof of purschase.
Many stories about lost gift cards from Target and other merchants are online and they all echo the same story and plea - save your reciept or give it to the recipient and make them promise to keep it in a safe place.
