Despite the fact that a hack story is very exciting and makes for good reading, it turns out that it simply is not true. The Washington Post published a story today that identified the fact that there is no hack, these thieves have simply been using stolen credit cards to buy iTunes gift cards and then resell them on sites such as ebay and craigslist. According to this story, Apple has plugged two security issues around the iTunes web site but these were not related to gift cards.
