In an interesting article, wired magazine points out that unique dvd releases are hoping to gain sales through gift cards. In 2009 we are seeing some cool and obscure movies being released on DVD. These movies include Dr Who, vintage Speed Racer and more.
Interesting to see Wired suggesting that the people releasing these are hoping for gift cards to give a boost to their sales. On some level it does make sense though. In this economy, we are going to be hard pressed to see people spend their cold hard cash on DVD's, let alone old school cult DVD's with no star power. I see the distributors pinning their hopes on gift cards as more of a hail mary than a calculated guess. But in this economy, Hail Mary's are sometimes all we have.
