The internal debate for every gift card giver is "will this seem like I didn't want to spend time thinking of a gift" or worse, "I don't know this person well enough so I hope a nordstrom gift card will do." I say there are two answers to this. In certain situations you are certainly just taking the easy way out with a gift card but on other occasions it is exactly the right gift. You simply have to identify which camp you are in.
If you are rushing to buy your 14th gift of the holiday season and it is for your cousin in Florida and you resort to a gift card from the North Face you are probably not trying hard enough. But also realize that gift card giving is becoming more and more appreciated and accepted. Gift cards are a much warmer gift than they were 4 years ago.
