Visit most any athletic related ecommerce site and I can almost promise you that there will be a gift card offering. I like this trend and am excited to see it in the athletic vertical as well as many others. On our site we featuer many athletic gift cards. Here are just a few we have posted: holabird sports gift cards, the north face and here is our entire sports related directory.
My point around this is not so much to draw attention to specific sites offering gift cards it is to show the power of momentum in the gift card space. The sports relates sites see their competitors offering online gift cards and they push to do the same. This is healthy for the industry and healthy for ecommerce in general.
There are many verticals that need to dive deeper into the world of gift cards. Online music and entertainment stands out to me as one that really needs work. Certainly iTunes has a wonderful gift card offering but I have been blown away by some of the lack of activity by the competition.
